Did you know that there is actually work that has to be done before you start making money? The first step to making money on the internet is to do your research.  Allow me to show you a few things that you are going to need to research before you even think you might make some money.

What You Want To Sell

When it comes to affiliate marketing  it is a lot easier to promote something that you really love. This is not necessary at all but it will help things go a lot smoother when you are trying to write content and promotional articles.  When you find out what you want to promote you need to make sure that there are keywords that you can rank for in the search engines. Keywords

Simply put keywords are what you put into the search engine when you want to find something. You may have plugged something like “making money on the internet” to find this page. That would be the keyword. Pretty simple.

Ranking

Ranking means ranking in the search engine.  Every website wants to be #1 for the keyword that they are trying to rank for. Once again this page would be trying to rank for “making money on the internet” or “first step to making money on the internet”.  The reason that we want to rank for these keywords is because this is the information that we are providing and you are going to be interested in what we have to say and offer. This is why anyone would want to rank in the search engines.

Can I Use Any Keyword?

Yes, you can use any keyword but that’s not going to help you very much if you can’t rank for it. You need to make sure who your competition is and if you can beat them out or not. One of the ways that you can check is how high their page rank is, how many backlinks they have as well as the strength of competition. I use a keyword research tool to figure this out for me that saves me hours and hours of work and I suggest that you check it out as well.

Picking the right keyword is extremely important.  If you do not pick the right keyword you may be working to get a high ranking on a pretty difficult keyword that you are not ready to take on.  One of the best ways for beginners to go about picking a good keyword to try to rank for is by going to google and typing in the keyword with ” ” around it… like “how to milk a cow” if the results are 5,000 or under then try to rank for it. You should be able to get a pretty high ranking in the search engines if you are using an authority site.

It is extremely important that you get indexed in Google. If you are not indexed in google then people can not find you and you will not earn any money. Traffic = money. So what does it mean to get indexed? That means that google goes find your site and when you type your site into google it is there. You can check if your site is indexed by type site:whateveryoursitename.com and then all of the pages from your site should come up.

Getting indexed in google can be pretty frustrating. You get your site up but it’s already been a month and you still can’t find your site? One great way to get your site noticed by google is to go into a wordpress blog and blog about it. Blogger.com and some other blog sites are helpful for this as well.
